Jack Flash x TED talks

Our long time friend and associate Jack Flash (former EOW world champ, etc etc) was recently asked by TED to host a talk. You will probably be aware of the wide ranging, educational and entertaining talks hosted around the world by TED (find out more here).

Here Flash chose to base his talk on his lyrics and how the audience and himself relate, using the format of reading and then dissecting each lyric in turn.  An intriguing idea that I have seen few similar examples of, but really like the format.

The main basis is seemingly how he has matured as an artist, how he learnt to overcome his fears and really begin to create much more personal lyrics without the facile, cliche content much of the genre is defined by…. and as he mentions within, this is not a slight on others’ content – but more a recognition of his true voice coming through finally, after years of honing his skills. It’s great to see and much respect to him…

Take some time and elevate your mind a little….

Bishop Nehru x MF DOOM

MG_5955-copy

This 18 year old NYC rapper/producer/director has already been making waves from age 13 making beats, to opening for Wu Tang Clan on their 20th anniversary tour last year. I first became aware of him with his debut EP Nehruvia, having heard a few of the tracks separately, a mix of top quality beats from Hip-Hop heavyweights such as DOOM, J Dilla & Madlib garnished with his beyond his years lyrics.

Now as many have heard his most exciting project is forthcoming, a collaborative EP with the legendary MF DOOM, his first retail release it will be available on Lex Records from Sept 23rd and is sure to be straight dope.

The dope album art was done by Ghostshrimp, who designed the world for super crazy cartoon, Adventure Time.

Here is the first track to be released from the project:

Evan Black – For The Birds

b6aad061-786c-4834-b21b-d33d5dc96440

Some real nice music for you this morning from Boston native Evan Black, his second release after  “The Arrival” which featured the likes of Emilio Rojas, Skyzoo and Reks, boasting a definite Boston feel to this, ‘For The Birds’ is a personal and heartfelt journey through relationships, drinking, daily life and Hip-Hop. His vocals the only featured on the release, flow in harmony with the excellent production by Portland-born recording artist and beatsmith Customary. The release features 12 original new tracks produced by Customary including the singles “Go Round,” “Stay Young” and “Cheap Date.”

Chris B. Murray provides the totally awesome original album artwork.

Okay so we can’t embed the songs, but you can listen/download etc here.

Purchase via iTunes here.

Napoleon LV – Take it Away

takeitAway

Straight out of North Carolina, Napoleon LV may be relatively new to the scene (starting in 2009), but he is already making an impact – having worked with “Little Brother”, Curren$y, Hot Spitta/ Wiz Khalifa and having worked on videos for 2chainz, Asap Rocky, CamRon & Red Cafe.

‘Take it Away’ is his latest release from the EP “Superb”, produced by Russian Natives ∆PƩXProduction.

If I had to say, I would say it is reminiscent of someone like Fashawn to me but with a much more cinematic feel, to the music especially, this is some chilled-out, slightly dark, anthem kind of vibe. Check out some of his other work too, an interesting sound which seems quite removed from lots of other current Hip-Hop. It’s set to be an interesting release! You can find out more about Napoleon IV via his Twitter here.
