Sound System Culture is a book which documents Huddersfield’s rich history of reggae music, in particular the sound systems and Blues parties/Dancehalls of the 1970’s – 80’s. Featuring a selection of superb photography which gives a rare, insiders look at the people and indeed the beautifully hand-crafted equipment which powered the scene; this book is a real gem.
The book has been very well received, with reviews in major publications such as The Independent and in respected culture blogs such as It’s Nice That, and with good reason, the book has been produced with a real reverence and attention to detail, not surprising when Al Newman’s (designer/publisher) previous books include the revered ‘Clarks in Jamaica’.
Conceived by Mandeep Samra and written by Paul Huxtable (Axis sound system, and Valv-a-tron hand-made valve amplifiers), with wonderfully intimate photography, the book is equally enjoyable to the uninformed and audio-geek alike.
As well as the book the project has featured an exhibition and a documentary film, view the trailer for the forthcoming documentary ‘Sound System Culture’ follow their videos here.

As an extra treat for you reggae fans, an interview with the legendary Winston Rodney aka ‘Burning Spear’ after his appearance at Cleopatra’s in Huddersfield in 1980.

Long time friends of Dirt Cheap, Extra Curricular, yesterday released their debut single ‘Wont Stay Down’ – on DJ Doorly’s new label, Pigeonhole This!.
The track has been getting a lot of love from people such as Zane Lowe and Example, with a huuuuuuge remix from SpectraSoul being played on Friction’s Radio 1 show last week.
It’s currently (at the time of writing) up to number 18 in the Itunes Electronic chart, so lets try get it even higher!
Extra Curricular have been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven music on the UK underground live circuit since early 2009 and now serve up a new EP Wont Stay Down on Doorly’s Pigeon Hole this label with help from the boss himself.
The group combine soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture and are fronted by Thabo, with a live horn section, electric guitar, bass and drums all coming together in mesmerising live jams with boundless amounts of energy all supported by BBC 6Music, 1Xtra and more.
As well as an acapella version, the lead single by EC and Doorly is a dancefloor aligned version of the original that shines bright and kicks hard somewhere between jungle and dubstep. It’s a maximalist sound with rave inducing drums and classic rock rap vocals that will surely blow up on release.
‘Wont Stay Down’ the original grows out of raw guitar notes, swelling synth sounds and a fizzing electronics before an emotive voice sings about the troubles of being knocked down and bouncing back again. It’s a dense network of dubstep energy, live horns and saw tooth synths that combines the best of rock noise with bass energy.
