EXTRA CURRICULAR – Won’t Stay Down

Long time friends of Dirt Cheap, Extra Curricular, yesterday released their debut single ‘Wont Stay Down’ – on DJ Doorly’s new label, Pigeonhole This!.

The track has been getting a lot of love from people such as Zane Lowe and Example, with a huuuuuuge remix from SpectraSoul being played on Friction’s Radio 1 show last week.

It’s currently (at the time of writing) up to number 18 in the Itunes Electronic chart, so lets try get it even higher!

Extra Curricular have been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven music on the UK underground live circuit since early 2009 and now serve up a new EP Wont Stay Down on Doorly’s Pigeon Hole this label with help from the boss himself.

The group combine soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture and are fronted by Thabo, with a live horn section, electric guitar, bass and drums all coming together in mesmerising live jams with boundless amounts of energy all supported by BBC 6Music, 1Xtra and more.

As well as an acapella version, the lead single by EC and Doorly is a dancefloor aligned version of the original that shines bright and kicks hard somewhere between jungle and dubstep. It’s a maximalist sound with rave inducing drums and classic rock rap vocals that will surely blow up on release.

‘Wont Stay Down’ the original grows out of raw guitar notes, swelling synth sounds and a fizzing electronics before an emotive voice sings about the troubles of being knocked down and bouncing back again. It’s a dense network of dubstep energy, live horns and saw tooth synths that combines the best of rock noise with bass energy.

Tracklist:
Extra Curricular & Doorly – Won’t Stay Down
Extra Curricular – Won’t Stay Down (Original Mix)
Extra Curricular – Won’t Stay Down (Acapella)

Acoustic Revolutionaries Download Site

Acoustic Revolutionaries, Huddersfield’s bi-monthly programme of acoustic music organised by The Media Centre, is launching a new website featuring live recordings from over thirty bands and musicians who have performed at the popular event. What’s more, users can download their favourite tracks absolutely free, to listen again at their convenience.

Acoustic Revolutionaries, based at The Media Centre’s Café Ollo, has been running since March 2007 and since then has grown to be a premier showcase for young Kirklees-based musicians aged between 16 and 25. The concept was devised by Programme and Marketing Manager for the Centre, Clare Danek; the events are organised and delivered by local music successes Ruby Wood and Noah Burton. Performers have included local hip hop heroes Extra Curricular, the award winning human beatbox Ball-Zee, accomplished jazz guitarist Graham Garside, and a host of other musicians from bluegrass in the west to world music from the east.

Danek said, “Acoustic Revolutionaries has grown to be an established feature in the local events calendar, and the new website gives more people chance to hear great bands and musicians. It’s great that The Media Centre can support talent in this way.”

The website can be found at www.acousticrevolutionaries.co.uk and the next Acoustic Revolutionaries night takes place at Café Ollo, The Media Centre, on Wednesday 19th October.

// Extra Curricular//

are a Hip Hop/Soul group from Huddersfield, UK. Fronted by Jack Flash (MC), Ruby Wood (Vocals), and Thabo Mkwananzi (Vocals), the group also feature a live horn section, turntables and samplers, alongside electric guitar, bass, and drums. Formed from an exclusive after-hours jam club, Extra Curricular have been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven hip hop music on the UK live circuit since early 2009. The EC live show is something to be witnessed, they involve the whole crowd from start to finish taking the listener on a journey through hip hop grooves, soulful vocals, and huge anthemic choruses. Their debut single ‘Home’ is set for release on March 7th, 2011. The last twelve months have been phenomenal for the Hip Hop/Soul group Extra Curricular. The year started with the creation of ‘The ECEP’; a collection of five tracks the band distributed at shows and through the music service ‘Bandcamp’. They took to the road playing numerous club shows around the country and, come summer, stepped their sound up to fill the green fields of the UK summer festival circuit. It was during this time that the group could be seen jumping from stage to transport and on the the next festival , sometimes playing shows at opposite ends of the country on the same day! This saw EC’s audience increase spectacularly and led to airplay on local and national shows such as BBC 1EXTRA, BBC6 Music, BBC Leeds, LSRadio (Leeds), and ICRadio (London). Never ones for complacency the group saw this as an opportunity to foster the connections made in greenrooms and car parks and pushed to play esteemed venues and festivals such as Limetree Festival, Greenbelt Festival, Manchester Academy, Doncaster Civic Theatre, and Brixton Mass. This led to support slots with esteemed acts such as Youngblood Brass Band, Jehst, and in January 2011 the group will support ‘Red Dwarf’ legend and BB6 Music DJ Craig Charles at The Elbow Rooms in Leeds. http://www.extracurricularband.com/ http://www.myspace.com/extracurricularband // PRESS QUOTES// “Needle sharp, tight as a drum! The lean funk stylings of Huddersfield 9-piece Extra Curricular… The Rhythm section could just of easily of come out of New Orleans or Mussel Shoals as Huddersfield!” Tom Robinson (BBC6 Music) “Live hip hop/soul/funk all mixed together with a horn section! That’s sounding really interesting!” DJ Target (BBC RADIO 1EXTRA & ROLL DEEP) “…their set was a master class in reaching across musical boundaries and drawing in listeners.” TRAFFICMAG.ORG “That was a very wonderful thing – That was Extra Curricular live in session… I’m absolutely dumbstruck, I loved it! The way they use the vocals together is an art.” Alan Raw (BBC Raw Talent) “I’ve just watched Extra Curricular live at the Limetree festival and they knocked the ball out the park, tore the roof off the sucker!” Craig Charles (DJ & BBC6 Music)
