Girl Power!

So before i enter 2013, i thought i would share one of my favourite upcoming trends with you guys. Girl power has been creeping up on us for a while and it has finally arrived. Take the sound of modern day bands, Vivian Girls and Best Coast with The Cranberries add a little sprinkle of Spice girls the movie (a guilty pleasure of mine) and classic 90′s TV shows, Clarissa explains it all and my so called life – Ladies and gentlemen we have ourselves the modern and playful 90′s trend!

90's spirit

90′s spirit -  WGSN trend board.

The catwalks were filled with 90′s girl power,  models skipped down the runway sporting big bunches, bulky frayed braids and lots of ponytails. You want scrunchies you’ve got them, glitter, velvet, printed, the choice goes on and on. The pretty grunge trend has a dreamy, youthful essence, dominant delicate colour palettes of pastels works well with retro prints, lace and denim. Go playful with frosted pink lips, blushed cheeks and pastel hair dyes – a great way to complete the look.

Get creative and  show your inner spice girl with modern platforms, halter necks and coordinating colours. Alternatively grunge the trend up, wearing lots of layers, double denims and big black flatforms. You can go as girly or grungy as you desire, just remember to find your 90′s spirit in 2013.

Must See TV

Boardwalk Empire

Season 3 of Boardwalk Empire premiered on Sunday, for those who haven’t seen it, we strongly suggest you take a look! Possibly a little more difficult to get into than your usual trash TV (Good in my opinion) watch it from the start, worth it if only for episode 1 – directed by Martin Scorsese, and enjoy the glorious, epic story.

Sumptuous costume and sets really immerses you in the 1920′s, the era of prohibition; the level of detail is simply stunning. The story focuses on Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson (Steve Buschemi) and his struggle to maintain his power over Atlantic City. The cast is large (and talented) and story-lines many, with back stories to each character helping to build an authentic and realistic vision of the time and narrative.

I really cannot recommend it enough, one of the best TV programs of recent times. Hats off to HBO, again.

Watch Boardwalk Empire in the UK on Sky Atlantic, Saturday September 29th at 9pm.

The Thick of It

Not to be outdone by our cousins over the Atlantic, this month also saw the premiere of season 4 of  The Thick of It, a satirical comedy based on the UK’s political parties and those in power (of course none of the characters are based on real people… hmm).

Created by Armando Ianucci (above) one of the people behind some of the best comedy on TV in recent years (Seriously, almost every good bit of comedy to come about has had him behind the scenes!), it examines both the party in power and the opposition, the main draw to the program has got to be Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) the Labour Spin Doctor, and his foul mouthed rants which are hilarious. The program is not only funny, witty and entertaining – it also goes a long way into looking at the state of the nation and how it is governed, exposing some of the ridiculous situations that can arise; I think it’s examination of the relationship between the press and government is particularly interesting and probably quite accurate.

Watch The Thick of It on BBC Two, Saturdays 9:45pm.

FACE IT – IT’S BEAUTY.

Over the years, “Bella Donnas” have graced our screens with their beauty. One shot and we were all stunned by their classic, glamorous and graceful poise. Take at look at a few of my favourite  faces which have inspired me.

LAUREN BACALL

Image

- I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that.

Bacall hit our screens in the 1940′s and 50′s. The American actress starred in films “To have and have not” and “The Big Sleep”. She later married regular co-star Humphrey Bogart and what an influential and chic couple they were! Lauren Bacall always managed to fuse girlish innocence with sultry sinners. Her husky voice and trademark arch eyebrows, thick waves and flawless skin is why she is still remembered today as a forever beauty.

HEDY LAMARR

Image

– Any girl can look glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid.

If one beauty had it all, Lamarr was it. They say beauty and brains is a rare exception, Hedy Lamarr was that exception. This Austrian actress of the 40′s was nicknamed “The most beautiful woman in films”. Nude scenes of Lamarr came as no surprise to us, this seductive kitten had a body to die for and was not afraid to flaunt it.  With a pout to kill, you would not believe this doe-eyed beauty was also a rocket scientist? Whatever she did, she did in style. Chic and glamorous, wearing mostly off the shoulder gowns with a feminine touch of lace or pleats. This beauty lives on, in more ways then one.

DAME ELIZABETH TAYLOR

Image

                – I adore wearing gems, but not because they are mine. You can’t possess radiance, you can only admire it.

Elizabeth Taylor is a name which will go down in history. The British born American actress  first appeared on our screens mid 40′s and she took the world by storm, starring in “Jane Ayre” “BUtterfield 8″ and “Cleopatra” . Her glamorous lifestyle, radiant beauty and superb talent made her a woman we all adored. Taylor was born with a strange mutation leaving her with two sets of eyelashes, this only enhanced the stunning violet- blue eyes of hers, resulting in a breathtaking and captivating face. One thing to remember about Elizabeth Taylor is- she will forever be the queen of jewellery. Diamonds, pearls, gems – anything that sparkles she wore. The glamorous Jewell with shine on with her beauty legacy.

MARILYN MONROE

Image

- I don’t want to make money, I just want to be wonderful.

The woman whose beauty lives on. The American actress, model , singer and sex symbol touched the hearts of many. The 50′s and 60′s star adored the camera, and the camera adored her right back. Her platinum locks, curvacious figure and red lips were a definite trademark of Marilyn’s. Her charismatic behavior and individual beauty wooed the preseident, made her the very first face to feature on the  issue of Playboy magazine, she even appeared on the sleeve of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It is easy to see her beauty and style has inspired us all. Cheeky, classy and legendary, Marilyn Monroe-  Loved by many, hated by some, remembered by all.

AUDREY HEPBURN

-I never thought I’d land in pictures with a face like mine.

My final beauty is the iconic and truly original Audrey Hepburn. When i was a little girl my mother had me sit and watch many famous films featuring this star. Audrey was different from all other classic beauties. She broke the mold of Hollywood glamor- with her elfin like features and tall slender frame. Before Hepburn it was all about curves and curves, her  androgynous look is what made her unique. She was adored by the public and effortlessly became one of the coolest, chicest woman to grace our screen. Voted the most beautiful woman of all time,  she had a certain je ne sais quoi about her which was indescribable. Hepburn’s defying role happened in 1961- with the desirable and adorable Holly Golightly  in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s “. She was a true beauty who took our breath away. Her legacy of style, class and giving back to the world lives on. “how do i look”- still as classic as ever.

so there you have it. Classic beauties. who is your favourite?
